Li Po's Farewell (An impression)  /30

 

 

There is another way

  to halt the day

than this hour here

  alone with you,

trading secrets.

 

We can turn the sky

  over us like a blanket

and follow this afternoon

  to darkness.

 

Now, blow out the candle.

  Let's dream the stars

clear through and trade

  the secrets of tonight

 

for tomorrow.

    I drew this lantern on Jumpoff, probably 50 years ago. You can see from one edge i tore this out of a sketch book and framed it to remind me of how simple was at one time.

  Metaphor  /11   The voice of the river names itself, then turns another bend   toward closing stillness; ocean's pine box where noise becomes music and sound becomes the dryness of loose leaves seeking a lee.   I felt myself flow then: the tumble in a kind of dream and reached toward the pool quiet grave   passing out of reach like a stick turning on the river  past out-stretched arms.    The river is a metaphor but so is the grave.   11.
